Annie McGill is an artist primarily working in clay, ink and gold leaf, with sculpture and drawing at the centre of her experimental practice.
She explores relationships, feelings and shared human experience. Although the themes are universal, the viewer is invited to find their stories within the work, exploring their own feelings and ideas. Two themes she continually returns to are In Memory of Clay and Torsos.
The series In Memory of Clay is created through life drawing in clay relief, composing these figures on board and then experimenting with different mediums to create original sculptural drawings. This reversal of traditional methods, where 2D sculptural drawings would normally inform 3D final pieces, is a process the artist has developed over many years. Initially developed to overcome a lack of access to a kiln, this unique process continues to capture her imagination with it’s myriad of possibilities.
The figures in the Torsos series tell stories through their interaction with each other. Each piece is formed through the folding and moulding of clay and is a meditation by the artist. Primarily focused on the female form, they express the strength, grace and courage exhibited by women, embracing the scars they carry.
